editing 24P footage for 25P output
Hi
I´m editing a music piece shot in 24. Now, my output is PAL television. I know they should have shot it in 25, but that´s too late now, and as usual: there´s very little time left for post. I have never encountered this issue, since I always edit in the timebase that is the planned output framerate: 24 for film, and 25 for everything else.I can think of one solutions, but it seems to produce sideissues.
I could just edit it in 24, and then just tell the online facility to speed it up to 25, right? But I suppose that would make the length and tempo of the music 4% off (and the producers probably don´t want that), and there would be some repeated frames, and or some ghosting to make up for the missing frames.
My question is; is there any other way around this? and: Am I right about the effects of a speedup in post?
My setup is FCP 6.0.6, with no additional plugins

Edit and output 23.98. Take to a post facility with a Terranex or other high end converter, and have them do the conversion.
You can TRY the Nattres plugin…https://www.nattress.com (standards converter)…but it was meant for small clips, not full shows. But worth a shot, no?

If you don’t have the budget to have this done with Teranex or Alchemist, then your best bet is the “24 at 25” option. Simply use Cinema Tools to change the speed to 25fps. You will get a frame to frame output, but your show will be 4% shorter. You may have to make it up somehow, by cutting in more material, perhaps, if the network or producer requires it.

Shane’s way is probably the simplest,
but here’s an idea:doing your edit at 24 will definitely be simplest as the pictures will sync to the audio.
the simplest, fastest, cleanest, and cheapest way to get that to 25fps is to conform the final export in CinemaTools
but this will result in the audio speeding up.so go ahead and cut your video at 24fps,
make a version of the AUDIO that plays SLOW
to do this, put the audio track in a 2fps sequence, with some slug, or a title generator,
export, open in Cinema Tools, and conform to 24.
(you need video for the conform to work)when you have locked off your clip, cut against the correct audio,
copy the sequence,
replace the audio with the slowed down track,
re-adjust your cuts to maintain sync.(obviously this wil be easier if there are quick cuts)
export, open in CT and conform BACK to 25.
am i crazy, or would that work?
you should test this with one take of the sync performance, if you have that.oh and your footage may actually be 23.98, so double check that, too.
