looking for Gary Adcock’s paper on Pro Res
Hello,
I’m looking for Gary’s paper or thread / blog… on working with ProRes, could someone help with a link?
I searched and Gary has about a million and 1 posts (btw, thanks for all the help Gary!)
I’m trying to figure out if exporting to pro res HQ is worth it. I’m working with footage that was shot in HDV(JVC) and captured to DVCPRO720p final output will be to 1080i HDCAM SR for Broadcast.
My understanding is that ProResHQ can be or is overkill unless your footage originated as 1080i or even 2k. By making the footage ProRes HQ I’m not making the footage look any better, correct, the footage “is what it is.”Thanks for any help.

Out of respect for the Cow and since it only available on a different website, Google ” ProRes, a Closer Look” and it should be the top link since it has been viewed about a bazillion times (actual view count is well into the millions)
the update tests are underway and I hope to have it updated in the next 30days ( it has taken me a while to get a 12bit / 4444 scope to test with- it is not exactly an off the shelf item)

Short answer is no. ProRes HQ is best for resolutions over 1080 as it has been explained to me. We use ProRes for all our work currently.

The codec to use have nothing to do with the picture size.
Rendering to a 10b codec will help in any effect, motion change, graphic or whatever you put in your time-line.
If you are going to HDCAM SR some time you have to go to 10b, so render to Proress or 10b Unc.The idea of “it is what its is” is wrong. One of the meanings of “post-production” is to improve the original picture. A humble DV or HDV picture can be very much improved. Improvements that you will kill if you render back to any of those codecs. Don’t re-compress what have already been highly compressed.

PS: Working with lesser quality format is more challenging but also can be much more rewarding.
When you start with a good picture there is no much to do. With the others you really need to use your best skills. -

Thanks for the reply.
Again, the footage was shot in HDV (JVC camera) captured to DVCPRO 720p, edited in DVCPRO 720p
I’m finished with the edit (all fx’s, filters, etc…) I now need to export one file for delivery. PRORES HQ was asked for preferably however, I read on a different thread that unless you are working with 2k files PRORES HQ is essentially overkill.
And if I’m reading Walter Biscardi’s reply correctly he agrees that PRORES HQ would be overkill and he works in PRORES.
I was not going to render out to anything less then PRORES (i.e. DVCPRO, HDV,)PHIL
