capturing DVCAM
I almost always shoot in standard def. with my PD_150. Recently I tried shooting in dvCam. When i connected to FCP I pulled up the capture screen and began playing the footage. When I selected “capture” the capture would only download a few seconds of footage and then freeze, with some message about timecode issue. Tried again and again to no avail.
Tried shooting in dvCam with my HVR-A1U, same results.
Where am I going wrong? The setting in FCP??? -

DVCAM is Standard Definition. It’s no different than DV except it has slightly better quality.

The only major difference between DV & DVCAM is that they use different tape speeds. DVCAM rolls at a 50% faster speed (DVCAM = 15 microns per second; DV = 10 microns per second). The image quality is exactly the same.
Are you trying to capture from a different deck than either of your cameras? Is your deck DV only? The deck will have a DVCAM logo if it can play back DVCAM tapes.
Have you tried to capture from both the PD-150 and the HVR-A1U?
Perhaps the tape hubs are getting stuck and not allowing the tape to spin freely in its shell?
Have you tried a different DVCAM tape to see if it works? -

I’ve tried every combination. My normal camera for capture does not shoot DVCAM, so that became clear very quickly.

Tried from HVR-A1U–no cigar. Also tried from PD-150; Same thing happened. No cigar! Go and shoot DV and works perfectly on capture. Go figure.Perhaps the tape hubs are getting stuck and not allowing the tape to spin freely in its shell?
Have you tried a different DVCAM tape to see if it works?I’ve been shooting on standard MiniDV tape. Mostly Panasonic.

Hmmm… well you got me. I’ve been editing DV & DVCAM since before FCP even existed (with a Nubus Mac 8100 and Radius Edit) and I’ve never had the computer only capture DV but not DVCAM.
Are you using a customized setup? Have you tried using the Easy Setup for DV-NTSC?
Have you only had this problem with one tape?
Have you tried recording DVCAM footage in both your PD150 and HVR-A1U or just the PD150?
