    Here’s a somewhat esoteric question:

I use a Intel Quad for FCS work. On my network I also have a headless Dual G5 which I access using ARD. I want to use it for background compressing of DVDs, etc.

FCS apps do not run without an attached monitor — they do a check before they fully start. I can fool FCS by temporarily attaching one of my two monitors, and then detaching after it starts. A bit of a pain as my edit bay re-estate is tight.

There are things like the discontinued DrBott Ghead that simulates an attached monitor, but I’m not having any luck finding one. Any other solutions out there?

You can go to a thrift shop, Goodwill, garage sale, etc. and pick up a small CRT monitor for $5-$10.

Just connect it up to the Mac and let it sit.

I’ve come across a coupe of mods that wire up a DVI connector to fool the computer into thinking it has a monitor attached.

    Try Google

You don’t need a a monitor, you don’t even really need ARD. for this.

You just need to set up a virtual cluster on the G5 using qmaster. Then when you submit a job in compressor on your main editing machine you can choose what cluster you want to have do the job. You can also for even faster video crunching also set up a virtual cluster on your main Mac Pro edit station and then when you submit a job in compressor from the main station select the box that says “Include unmanaged services on other computers” This will then use BOTH computers to do the job.

Just make sure that both computers are hooked up to the same network via GigaBit Ethernet. DONT DO IT VIA WIFI.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!
