  • Advice on MBP for P2 Workflow

    Which Macbook Pro would be better for me, considering my P2 workflow (HPX 170);

    New, latest, entry level MBP 15-inch 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory, 250 GB hard drive, Nvidia 9400 256 MB VRAM (but one Firewire and no Expresscard slot if I’m correct), or,

    Superseeded, as New (they’ve said NEW, but I believe it’s an Ex-Demo, 12 months warranty both), 15″ 2.6 GHz, 2 GB Memory, 200 GB hard drive, 7200rpm, Nvidia 8600 512 VRAM (with 2 Firewire ports and Expresscard slot).

    Interestingly, the price for both is the same: $2,700 Australian.

    I know I want 2 Firewire ports, but I could survive with one, but what I’m not sure of, what advantage I’m getting with Expesscard slot, as I’ve read somewhere that actually Powerbook with PCMCIA would be best for P2 transfer.
    Of course I’m planing to edit with this new Macbook Pro, it’s not intended primary for P2 ofload.

    Just to add, I’m currently using a G5 and it’d still be used for most of my work (can’t use new FCP7 hence MBP purchase),
    of course, unless I fall in love completely with MBP and relegate G5 to 2nd seat.

    Newest 15″ MBP does not come with Express 34 card. Express 34 will allow you to offload P2 cards using the Duel Systems adapter. If you want fast offload times compared to FW or USB from the camera, you want the older MBPro.

    Thanks Steve, I thought that’s be the answer.

    Regarding that Duel System adapter, I’ve read few reports of people having trouble with it,
    like being dicy or erratic, and is it normal operation that after every Duel adapter use,
    one has to restart the MBP?
