  • How to break up and log lengthy files?

I have a number of extremely long video files on a drive which I need to be able to log into smaller, more manageable clips with descriptions of the details and action taking place in each clip.

I’ve figured out how to do this if I’m capturing footage from a device (like a DV cam), but not if I’ve already got the clips on my drive. I feel like I’m overlooking something simple, but it escapes me. A few pointers, please?

Mark IN, mark OUT, Press CMD-U (Make Subclip). Then label that clip. Continue onto the next one. Now, this is non-destructive…the original QT files will be long, but the clips you have to look at and organize will be smaller.

And, a good alternative to sub-clipping is to place makers, which you can label, at strategic points in the file while playing back in the viewer, This creates a sub-directory in the browser which lists the labeled sections that you’ve created, much like subclips, but without actually creating any new clips.

I use subclips and/or markers at times depending on the project. Both methods have valid uses.
