Storage advice
Hi COW,
I am in need of expanding/replacing my current capture drives. We use a Ciprico Media Vault 2.5TB on an ATTO UL5D SCSI card. We have gone to HD (DVCPRO-HD) with several of our clients and simply need more room.
As Ciprico is now defunct (Huge Systems was awesome, Ciprico not so much) I need another brand of SCSI raid. I was thinking of going Caldigit and will probably go that route next year but as I have two SCSI workstations and several spare ATTO cards It makes sense for us to stay SCSi for a bit.
Long way around the barn but is there a consensus with regard to the best 8 drive, dual channel ULVD320 systems?
I am currently looking at the Proavio editRaid ERP320 8 disk u320. I can buy two of them for $4621 (16TB RAID 5). I cant to seem to find a review or any user feedback and would appreciate the Communities feedback

don’t go with SCSI. Buy a SAS controller and use a SATA array. People on this forum have reported speeds of 400-500MB/s with 8 drive arrays. And a SAS controller will support RAID 5.

Hi Arnie,
Thanks for the response. Yes I agree that SCSI is the past and that i should migrate away from it. That being said, since I have SCSI already deployed and the speed is acceptable, would you have any advice with regard to my original post?
Barring that I welcome advice on which SAS/SATA solutions people are using, what they pay for them etc.

SCSI is no longer supported by Apple so I agree with Arnie to move on to something new. All the new RAIDs come with the host cards anyway so it’s not like you have to get the RAID and a card added on.
I can’t say enough about Maxx Digital’s SAS/SATA RAIDS which are the EVO series. We run a set of EVO HD originals which are 2 to 3 years old now, 8TB each and they run rock solid.
We also run one of their new 16TB EVO 4k Expando units as part of our Final Share solution. You can read about that in my Cow Article. The beauty of this unit is if you need more storage in the future, you simply hang another chassis and daisy chain it just like firewire drives.

Maxx Digital also sells other brands such as Dulce and Sonnet which are also excellent choices. What you pay is wholly depending on how large of an array you get.
We run our units in RAID 5 for the excellent redundancy protection with outstanding speed easily supporting all resolutions up to and including 2k.

Don’t use them, won’t let them in my facility. You can search my name and CalDigit to find all my problems with them in the past. I’ve heard they are better now, but after being burned by their products three times, that was enough for me.

I should clarify, after reading my original response to your query, that I have never used the HD Pro. My experience with CalDigit pre-dates that particular model. Just so we’re clear about that.
