Recommended System Requirements for FCP ^?
Hey guys, looking to purchase a Mac with FCP 6 to start editing some HD footage here at work. The HD footage would be from various sources, DVCPro HD, HDCAM, HDCAM SR, HDV, AVCHD…etc. Basically we’re looking for a testbed system for the office and i’m wondering what are the minimum requirements to import, edit and export footage at a relatively quick rate?

With those formats, you need a Mac Pro and a good capture card (AJA, Matrox, Decklink). And you will need a fast Raid. You can get away with internal SATA drives if you stick to prores.
With hdcam and hdcam sr you need the MacPro.

Like Shane said, definitely get a Mac Pro. Doesn’t have to be the best Mac Pro, but I would suggest getting an 8-core version.

I see on the Apple forums that you said you are all new to FCP. If this is the case then I highly suggest that you buy a full system from a reseller. They k ow how to properly configure a system.

Ok, so we’ve got an quote on an initial system from a reseller. They’ve incorporated a Kona 3 card into the system. My question is have their been any conflicts with Kona and Macs newest OS and if so have they been resolved with updates? Also is there a big advantage to having a Kona 3 vs. a Kona LHi?

NO conflicts. But I’d opt for the Kona LHi over the Kona 3…unless you are going to be working with RED and 2K footage. If so, then go with the Kona 3. The LHi has analog inputs and the Kona 3 doesn’t.

Great, that’s what I needed to know. How does AJA usually work with driver updates? I know Snow Leopard is due out in Sept., do they usually release updates with new OS?

Hi,
I’ve got a mac book and I am trying to install FCP 5 or 7. The version 5 tells me that I need apple loops for soundtrack pro and the version 7 gives me an error. What’s the problem? what do I need? I don’t know very much about mac as I am new at it. Can I possibly install FCP 7? What’s the difference with Final cut studio?
