a few questions
Three Things:
1. – Im looking to get a another external hard drive for storing just my film files and capture scratch’s etc. Im a student so cant afford the most flash kit, like a SATA really, but was thinking of going for a 1TB drive either way. Any Suggestions?
I was considering a lacie Rugged for around £100, only problem i see is it being USB 2.0. Any other suggestions and if not what is bad with the lacie?
2. – When ive got my TB drive i want to move some of the film files ive accumulated from mac and my current rather small external hard drive. At the moment ive got all the files and they probably make up 180 GB, now i can just move this across, but is there a better way to store them? For example if i archive them as a .Zip will I reduce the file sizes by that much? or is there a better way to go about this?

eSATA is the fastest, but if you can’t do that, then get FireWire800. If your computer has FireWire400 instead, then get that. If you don’t have FireWire, then USB is your only option.
Don’t expect great results with USB drives and Macs. FireWire and Macs work much better together.
I don’t like to zip files for storage. With video files, it usually doesn’t buy you much.

Look a little harder…you can find the Lacie Rugged with FW 800. Esata is the best and not much more. Plus you can get a caldigit esata cartd for $45. Check out B&H

i just bought a couple of Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 2TB External Hard Drives.
They cost only £199 each for 2 TB…

I got them to use as Time Machine backups, so have not used them specifically for video. They do come with esata, usb 2, firewire 800 (including all the cables and a firewire 400 to 800 conversion cable.

I dint recommend the MyBook drives for editing usually. G-Tech (gdrive) & Lacie have been great to me. The rugged is actually quite nice and is bus powered. Really though…whatever you get, try to get a quad interface so you have four I/O options.
BTW, I’m sure the MyBooks are fine for backup purposes.
