New Macbook Pro Firewire Question
Posted by Lou Borella on July 8, 2009 at 1:23 pmNow that the new 15″ versions of the Macbook Pro line up only contain one FireWire800 port and no Express32 slot, what is the process for capturing footage from a camera or deck over Firewire to an external drive?
Can I daisy chain my DVCPro50 deck and an external drive? I was under the assumption that the capture source should be on separate firewire bus than the destination drive.
My 2008 MBP has a FireWire 800 and 400 (plus the X32 slot if I need it) so this has never been an issue when I am on the road.
Can the new machines handle the data through a daisychain. Is the 17″ model our only option for capturing footage from a tape because of the X32 slot?
Thanks

Don’t buy the 15″ model…you have to get the 17″. Some people have had success capturing by daisy chaining the camera to the hard drive then to the computer, but this isn’t 100%. Works for some, but not for others, and not all the time. DV I had no issues, but HDV…I couldn’t do it.

Yup…one reason I find the move by Apple to replace the X34 slot with an SD card slot stupid. But in their mind, only 10% of laptop owners use that slot, while 90% want and use an SD card slot. So they bowed to the CONSUMER on their pro-machines. Thus making their Pro Laptop no longer a pro laptop. Beyond stupid.

On the older MBP, both the FireWire 800 and 400 share the same bus, so it’s like you were daisy chaining. You shouldn’t have any additional issues with the new MBP.
Or you could also capture to a 16GB SD card…… hmmm…… For some reason, that just doesn’t sound appealing!

July 8, 2009 at 6:27 pmI never actually thought of using the SD card as a capture scratch disk!!!
(I’m pissed because its not CompactFlash).
Would that work? I know they are supposedly getting faster and bigger.
I really have no desire to lug a 17″ MBP around!!!
The only benefit of this is that my current 2008 MBP will be really valuable on Ebay when I decide to upgrade!!!Lou …

But Re storage / import / MBP issue, don’t you think we, with all this progress, take some inevitable
steps backwards.
I just recently purchased a HPX 170, after working hard to get the approval from my boss (yes, it’s my wife :).
Well, I was all excited explaining some features & benefits of the new Pana to her, when she stumped with a question (she’s not connected to the industry in any way) about backup, question that I’m constantly trying to push back: “But I remember you ware always saying – I’ll always have my tapes (in spite of all hard rives failures…).
I know you commented on the issue long time ago, but my question is; should we wait for the price
of the storage (hard drives, Blue Ray Discs, memory cards) to come down and absorb the cost of storage and backup, or should we just “adjust the price accordingly” and pass it on to the client?
Clients often do not ask what you are shooting with (apart from, “we like widescreen”)?
Especially in this gray zone of not having BD fully in place, when we are still output to DVD,
was I maybe better of purchasing two Canon XL2?
I mean, when you look at the DVD made from downconverted HPX 170 HD footage and to one made from XL2’s DV footage, there is no difference i quality (different look yes).Mio
