In a previous post I lamented that we have a lot of issues (dropped frames and crashes) with playing back DV in an XDCAM EX timeline with our 2008 MacPro 8-core (with 8GB of matched RAM – Wayne, I followed your advice, thanks!)
Despite no apparent hardware problems and a brand new reinstall of the OS and FCP, we still got dropped frames but only our 2008 8-core. An old 2005 G5 play it back fine and so did my laptop (all the playback and render settings match).

Well, I just came across this post from 2008:

Not sure if this will help, but I’m about to post something we found at the weekend.

We’re editing XDCAM EX HD (1080/24p) using the built in easy setup and dedicated built in drives as scratch disks.

We kept on experiencing dropped frames on playback, but only on our NEW 8 core Mac Pro not on any of our other Mac’s including our MacBook’s.

I turns out that if go to System Settings/Playback Control and you switch Gamma Correction from Accurate to Approximate it solves the problem for us. We have no idea why and would love an answer from Apple on this.

    Regards

    Daniel

This is exactly what we are experiencing and the Gamma Correction fix seems to work. No more dropped frames. Anybody else having this problem with their 8-cores?

    Hi Christopher,
A brand new system doesn´t means that is ready to work.
Run Diskwarrior, TechTools or Drive Genius.
I work with XDCAM in a MBP with some eSATA HDs and no drop frames.

    Hey Rafael,

I actually ran all 3 believe it or not – none of the tests came back with issues.

Just to clarify, we also work with XDCAM on a MBP without any problems. It’s just this one MacPro from 2008).

    Hi Christoph,
Had you installed the last FC update (6.06)?
have a look to the release Notes:

    It may fix your problem.

    Wow…. This sure sounds like a bummer….

I have the same setup and everything works perfectly on mine. BUT we do have a 2007 Quad Core 3.0 system with 8 gigs of matched pairs of RAM, the this thing has an issue with RT Effects showing up as realtime. Everything else about the machine is fine, just issues with RT Effects.
