P2 logging on PC and editing on FCP
I will be editing a feature length documentary in FCP 6. The director wants to log ahead of time in Adobe Premiere, so he can write down in and out points. My questions are:
Will the “timecode” of the clips match when they are opened in FCP’s Log & Transfer function?
Is there any way he can define IN and OUT points in Premiere and somehow log that info so that in FCP I can just transfer what he used? Or do I need to have him write down/type out the numbers and I find them in FCP to transfer to the hard drive?
The hard drive used by the Panasonic P2 camera is PC formated. Will this be a problem for me to edit the footage? Will I need to Log & Transfer form that HD to another MAc-formated HD? I am running Leopard 10.5.7

Logging in Premiere…can he export an XML? If you can import that then you might be able to Batch Capture the footage. But you need to open L&T and direct FCP to the P2 files first, THEN batch capture. I don’t know if this is possible…worth TESTING before you go all out and run with this.
In order to log in another piece of software and then export a capture list, that software needs the ability to export an XML file…as far as I know.

No, because you won’t be working with the master footage. Most likely you will import the footage, wrapping it in QT and transferring it to a MEDIA drive for editing. Or if you plan on using software tha allows for native MXF editing (but then you couldn’t limit your footage via IN and OUT points) like MXF4QT or Calibrated or Raylight, then you’ll need to COPY the footage to the media drive. Never ever work with the footage masters.

Let me probe a little closer to the crude alteranatives:
Could the person watch in Premiere (in a log window similar to Final’s L&T), write down the timecode of each selected clip and then give me that list for me to manually L&T in FCP? In other words, just simply will the TC match? I can’t see why not…Thx

Totally…that would work just fine. Timecode numbers won’t change…timecode is solid, and they both read it well.

And another thing I want to try…to track this bug (because turning off the network is a band aid)…can you copy the footage to your internal drive, just one folder, and then disconnect the drive, and then try? To rule out the drive.
