  • Pulling down audio files to 23.98 causing dropouts/ tiny distortions

    Hi,

We are importing WAV files from our sound recordist (24 bit, 48k) so we can sync to our 23.98 picture in FCP (picture was film -> DVCam with FLX files -> in at 29.97, reverse telecine applied for a 23.98 project).

Some merged clips are having dropouts/ slight distortions. Our sequence presets are set to 23.98 when we import the clips, and they play in sync. However, the sound quality is not acceptable. The odd thing is that it doesn’t happen on all the clips or even clips of certain durations consistently (although I would say in general we are noticing this on longer clips).

We are really in a bind – we have new footage coming at us every day and we have to resolve this asap.

We also are not hearing the problems on the original files (or at least on the synced sound on the videotape – the only reason we are syncing ourselves is to get the 24bit as the DVCam is 16 bit).

Is there a setting we are missing somewhere? ANY ideas highly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Wild guessing here, perhaps Andreas will jump in…
Only thing i can think of is that there is a sample rate conversion going on somewhere, perhaps to the 23.976 / 24 conversion.
How do you merging the files, in FCP?
Are you going back to film? In that case, try the audio finishing route, perhaps if the OMF output is brought back to 24 things get back to normal.

I am not sure why in this day & age people are going telecine to DV. Surely it makes more sense to transfer to ProRes or DVCPro100HD at true 24.

This is about the third or fourth post with this workflow giving some grief in a week. Drives and computers are big, powerful and cheap enough to surely leave SD tape behind on film based projects. Apart from frame rates, I just can’t stand seeing DV qual pictures on a film based project.
