  • importing NTSC dvd into PAL project?

Posted by Victoria Plummer on July 3, 2009 at 4:19 pm

I’m working on a cutdown of a long form project that was finished on PAL. I need to do an offline cutdown, but the only version I have to work from is an NTSC DVD. The final project will then be onlined from the PAL finished version.

Does anyone have any suggestions about the best way to import the DVD and manage the project so that the online will go smoothly?

    Thanks!

    Victoria,

So what is your plan, to eyeball match every cut in the online? I don’t see any other way you’re going to online this. Even if you were working in just one standard, there is no way to manage the project from a DVD based video file in a way that will make an online “go smoothly.” And, the fact that you’re cutting a file from an NTSC DVD and mastering with PAL sources just makes the whole thing that much more complicated.

    Or, am I missing something?

    Hi David,

Thanks for responding. No, you’re not missing something – I was just hoping that there was some technique that I was not aware of to have everything work somewhat easily. Unfortunately I don’t see any way around eyematching everything. Luckily it is not too long a piece.

Do you have a recommendation on the best way to import an NTSC DVD to a PAL project?

You can use Streamclip for free and it will rip the DVD and convert to many QT formats including DV PAL all in one step. That’s what I’d do… Even if it’s not perfect, at least you’ll be able to cut with it as a guide track.
