Updating FCP
Posted by Abbie Labadie on June 25, 2009 at 11:08 pmI’m trying to update Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 to the current 6.0.6, but I get an error message stating that “you can only install this software on a disk that has” Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. Well, the only update to be found on Apple’s site is the most current (6.0.6), so I can’t install updates one by one either.
This is so frustrating! I’ve searched for the older updates and can’t find them. It seems kind of ridiculous that they’re not available, yet I can’t install the most current update without first installing the previous ones.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

June 26, 2009 at 12:49 amYou can only get to 6.0.6 if you have OS 10.5.7 installed I believe.

June 26, 2009 at 3:56 amare there any reported issues with the latest FCP update? I’m new to FCP and don’t want to recommend that any of our editors make the upgrade even though this update is targeted at the computers that we’re using (early 2009 Mac Pros). Any insight on how to implement these point releases would be helpful.
thanks!

June 26, 2009 at 4:02 amI haven’t heard of anyone having issues, but you should always clone every system drive to an inexpensive firewire drive using either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper (both are freeware) before any update or upgrade, and have those standing by in case an update does mess up your system.

June 26, 2009 at 4:15 amThanks David – it was a bit of a lame question but I’m glad I asked – apps like that are the sort of thing that I just don’t don’t know about.

June 26, 2009 at 4:34 amThe FC updates are call “Pro Application Update”.
You need to install the “Pro Applications Update 2008-05” to be able to install FC 6.0.6 although I guess it should be by now a “Pro Applications Update 2009-1” or so when running the “software Udate”.

June 26, 2009 at 11:35 amNah, I’m still on 10.5.6 and I’ve just managed the update. Too scared to update the OS mid project, but not heard anything bad about the FCP update, so just took a deep breath and went for it.
Still can’t play real time HD 1080 properly, still get color shifts in and out of real time effects, still get colour shifts in and out of rendered effects and un-affected parts of a clip, still have inter-changing media through the same clip, still have….

Well, the update doesn’t address that at all. That is more of a drive speed issue. FCP lowers the resolution of footage in order to play it without dropping frames. Fully rendered or no. And these shifts, do they show up on an external broadcast monitor? Or just the computer monitor? As we say…all the time…never ever judge the quality of your footage using the computer monitors.
What sort of HD footge? Codec? Where is this footage stored? hard drive type?

July 7, 2009 at 6:34 pmI have the same problem. I’m running 10.5.7 and just installed FCP 6.0.1 in order to work on a project that was started on another system.
I tried to install the 6.0.6 update and get an error message that I need to update from 6.0.5.
I’ve just spent the last hour on-line looking for 6.0.5 and can’t find it.
Any hints? I’m a Avid user so this is all new to me.
