remote FCP editing
Hi,
I am in London UK, I want to use a Final Cut Editor in another European country to cut items to a polished level, and then for me to do the final pass and adjustments on my system.
What the best way to do this, I don’t want to ship drives/discs, how can i get him the digitised material and for me to pick up the project later and connect the media. Should I ftp everything to a server?
Or could he operate an edit laptop system in my home remotely.
any advice appreciated

You could use an FTP site, but it might take a long time depending on the length of the project. I’d ship a clone of the media drive myself if it’s a substantial project. Forget about controlling your machine remotely. It can be done and is an amusing parlor game, but you can’t really edit that way.

You can do something similar with iChat sharing. I’ve demoed a couple of times over a LAN. You can do it, but it’s more a novelty than practical. The response is simply not adequate.

If you share cloned drives of the footage, all you *really* need to pass back and forth is the FCP project file, yes? That’s not so big, it may pass an an email attachment or you can use an FTP service like Yousendit or similar to just send the new project file. if you keed good backups and stay organized, no problem, I should think.
This question is an area where Adobe has FCP beat. They have a system where you can review video as if it is a PDF file, and either end of the link watching it can control the timeline and scroll thru it at any point while the other watches. Like when a technician takes ermote control of your desktop to help you fix a problem.
You set it up with a skype call and the commands to control the timeline are carried along with the voice conversation. You would use this to share with a client remotely and collaborate. You don’t exactly edit this way, only review what’s already been edited to that point. Part of why the system runs so fast is that first you have to pre-load drives on both ends with the actual footage, or at least the same project file, then you’re only transmitting mouse commands in real time.
I forget what they call it, but it was very impressive.

problem with drives is it would be going to a non euro country, it may not get there in one piece but most likely they would think it’s an import and ask for import tax or hold it up in customs
would a set of dvds work
ftp sounds ok..? my rushes for one item are just 1 hour long

Well, they could work from low-rez proxy footage, but at some point you are approaching diminishng returns if you still have to combine the original-rez footage with the remotely-creeated FCP Program file.
My old late buddy Lou Rosenblate had a saying for this:
“Stepping over dollars, to pick up dimes”.

trouble is you have to meet the person or courier drives..not so easy cross borders

I’ve been told that Final cut server 1.5 will allow you to edit remotely by making a copy of your captured footage as Pro Res proxy files which would be compressed enough to be edited over a Lan connection. when you edit, the edits are applied to the non compressed footage when sent back into final cut server.
