Drop Frame TC question for deliverables
I have a deliverables list that requires an HD master to have bars/tone from 00:58:00:00 to 00:59:00:00 and program start at 01:00:00:00.
But the deliverables also call for a NTSC drop frame tc version: “NTSC transfer and down conversion masters must have continuous drop frame timecode and be frame accurate between versions.” There is no alternate bars/tone format listed for NTSC.
As I understand it the first two timecode values above can’t exist in drop frame. Furthermore, I don’t know how an HDCAM SR recorded at 23.98 psf can be “frame accurate” with an NTSC drop frame version. Timecodes would never match.
I’m getting my FCP sequences mastered at a great post facility, but I want to make sure things are set up right, and that the deliverables guidelines are met.

Are they asking for an HD master at 29.98 PSF? If so, they will never ever get drop frame code. 23.98 is NDF, end of sentence. However, 1080i29.97 and 720p59.94 are drop frame formats. So if their deliverable INSIST that the HD 23.98 master be drop frame and match exactly with any SD 29.97 downconvert, they are dreaming. And that would prompt a call from me to them to try to figure this one out.

That’s what I’ll have to do. The HD version is required to be 23.98 psf, the NTSC version is required to be drop frame … and they’re supposed to be frame accurate. This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten technically impossible specs.
