log & transfer of P2 clips a nightmare
I’m having a heck of a time ingesting footage into FCP.
I just bought a HPX300, shooting on the new “E” P2 cards. I’ve shot several tests clips in DVDPRO HD, Intra 50 & 100.
I have installed the latest P2 driver from Panasonic & the Intra Codec Plugin.
Once I shoot, I mount the camera on the desktop using USB. Create a folder on my HD and then copy all the files from the P2 card into that folder.
When I go to FCP 6.0.5 Log & Transfer (LT) no matter what combination of steps I take to ingest those clips, no clips come in. I keep trying different ways and then—sometimes— AGAIN sometimes…once in a great while….all of a sudden—one batch will come in. I’ll close the LT window and try to log them in again the same exact way and nothing. I’ll try going to a new folder with different clips and again nothing. I’ve even bought Noah’s P2 DVD. I’ve read everything I can on the web and everybody seems to make it sound so easy.
In LT, I’ve gone to the folder button in the top left corner and tried to ingest, then check my sprocket settings in the upper right, throwing away my FCP pref’s & cache files thinking they may be corrupted, I’ve restarted the CPU, I’ve gone back to the Panasonic website and redownloaded the driver & codec files and reinstalled.
I’m so frustrated. Everyone I’ve talked to said P2 workflow is great and you’ll never go back. Well, not for me so far.
Any ideas on how to fix this.

Hi Martin,
I don’t know how to help.
Seems to be either a wrong setting/setup within FCP or maybe a ‘structure’ error with the copied clips.
Maybe it’s even a simple issue because the files in the card folders do not have read permissions. So you may check that and set the rights.One other thing I can offer is to send me the clip XML folders. Maybe with this new cam Panasonic did make some slight changes with the P2 XMLs which are not recognized by FCP.

I’m using an HPX-300 right now and have had good luck bringing files into FCP. Flawless, actually. I have been using a small USB bus powered drive to offload the cards to an external drive right from the camera. I copy to the drive, verify the files and then reuse the card. I then use this drive in the log & transfer process in FCP. I’ve brought in both DVCPro and AVC Intra 50 clips without any problems. I converted the AVC Intra to ProRes when ingesting. I used the transfer feature built into the camera to offload the cards to the USB drive. You have to make sure that you get ALL of the folders from the card when you copy it. The only thing I needed to do with the AVC Intra clips was to go to Panasonic and download/install the Codecs for Quicktime.

DO you have Perian installed? FX Factory? Are you connected to a server of some sort other than a Media Drive server? I noticed that when I was on a server Log and Transfer took a looooong time to recognize a file folder.

No, I’m not connected to a server.
I thought I had this solved a couple of weeks ago as Steve mentioned and posted a previous post I made. It’s just screwy.
I think it’s a path recognition problem.
I’m doing everything right, up to date software, no fie wire walls etc etc., but as of last night here’s the way I found that consistantly works (for now at least)
In FCP, I go to:
Log & Transfer (LT)
• click open folder in LH corner
• click startup drive in menu cpu
• click the video raid in the menu
• folder w/clips
• contents
• select all files individuallyGo to top pull down menu, go back to video raid & dbl. click folder w/clips
Clips come in.So what that tells me is, is that I have to be very specific from the root folder in the cpu drive all the way thru all what I want to bring in and then dbl. click the folder to ingest.
it’s way more work than should be necessary but for me it works. FOR NOW.

Read my latest post. I THINK I’ve found a work around for now.

Do you have any weird or illegal characters in your folder’s name? Like a Number sign for example?
Try renaming the folder to your cards with no punctuation, except underscores.

I was having the same issue getting Log & Transfer to read the contents of a P2 card.
The only way it worked was when I was viewing my files in “columns view” For those who don’t just know what that means, i’m speaking of the options for viewing your files. Icons, list, columns. There are three buttons that let you pic the different settings.
Once you have set it to columns view then you have to click on your computer, hd, as many subfolders as it takes until you get to the p2 card contents.
This was the only method that worked for me.
