FCP closed captioning export, import into avid
Hi All,
this is my first post. I hope others can benefit.
I am currently editing a half our PBS show, which needs to be cc’d. As of now I edit the show in FCP 6.0.5 export to a DVCPRO HD 1080i60 .mov file and then copy to a NTFS drive(using paragon). Then I ship it off to the station where they import into an Avid and dump it to a DVCPRO tape.
My question is. If i put the black movie cc file within my fcp file and export to .mov, will the avid be able to import and read the closed captioning?

NO, it won’t. Nor will it be able to see the DVCPRO HD quicktime file you send. That codec is FCP specific only. They will need to get a decoder.

Plus, the only way to get CC to tape is either by dubbing through a device that adds it, or via closed caption software that works with FCP….but that only works if you output FROM FCP to tape. If you are outputting from and Avid, you will have to do the CC when you dub the tape.

Possibly unnecessary contribution to the thread: Anything that requires FCP to render media will strip off any information encoded or modulated in Line 21 which is where most closed captioning systems stash analog data.
