Multicam Editing
Posted by Joel Roszak on June 9, 2009 at 5:40 amAnyone know of a fix for the multicam editing problem from 4 up to 1 up. I know deleting the rendered files works but why does it happen? I have had my system for just over a year now, and am I overly disappointed, I wish I would have stuck with pinnacle studio.. Live and learn.

June 9, 2009 at 2:18 pmWhen I am editing a 2 camera shoot with the multicam function of FCP, the 4 up screen(4 camera screen) function stops working and I only see 1 camera at a time, thus not a multicam function anymore. The only way to fix this is to delete the render files of the sequence. My question is, when will Apple fix this and the rest of the bugs in the software. Has anyone heard of a version update coming out soon? I am becoming increasingly disappointed with FCP for all the bugs and quarks this software has.

June 9, 2009 at 2:30 pmOn a daily basis we’re using multi-cam for up to 12 angles. It does work as promised.
In your case, there can be many things causing this. Start with the easiest, simplest fixes like
restart, trash prefs, etc. Then, confirm that your media is EXACTLY the same format. No differences in
time code (DF vs NDF), frame rate or progressive vs interlaced. Are you saying the multicam viewer function WORKS if you delete renders? That seems to point to a mismatch of formats.

June 9, 2009 at 3:15 pmAre you rendering your multicam sequence? That will cause you to see just one clip. You will need to edit your sequence before you render it. Also do you have the Multicam enabled in your RT settings on your sequence? This also will cause you to see just 1 clip. We have been editing 5 camera shoots with Multicam for 3 years now and haven’t seen hardly any bugs since the last update to FCP6. If you are having to render your sequence, your computer or drives may not be fast enough or your footage may not be supported. What’s your setup and what codec are you using?

June 9, 2009 at 4:11 pmYes I render the clip after it is edited and put transitions into the edited sequence. I still think this is a huge bug because you can tell the program would like to display the two cameras but it flashes back to the 1up screen. Why wouldn’t it display the 2 cameras or for that fact 16 cameras after it is rendered, this boggles me. I do appreciate all the responses, the work around like I stated was to delete the render files and the multicam works pretty good. It’s just not a smooth application.

June 9, 2009 at 4:37 pmIt’s not a bug. It just doesn’t work the way you think it should.Multicam, despite its placement in the interface, is actually an effect. When you render it, you tell FCP to discard the upstream variables.
A suggested workaround is to duplicate your sequence before you render the original. As long as background rendering is OFF, your copy will remain multicam friendly and useful to you. This practice also gives you a series of versions that can really come in handy as you proceed through your editorial.
