Help Jittery playback on PAL TV
Bear with me on this one as it seems to me anyway quite complicated. I am using B-Roll footage downloaded in the following format.

I am then using either Visual Hub or MPEG Streamclip to import this footage into FCP 5 on a G4DP MDD Mac with 2 gig ram.
The export setting is set for 720 x 576 PAL, Anamorphic 16:9 Lower field dominance 48K Audio etc.
All works well in FCP but when I print to tape the resulting file is jittery with fast motion action.
As this is Motorsport footage that’s pretty much all of it.
My TV station says it’s a field dominance issue but FCP and QT both say the field dominance is correctly set (lower)
I have imported the same footage into Premier on a PC and no problems. The station uses Premier exclusively is now saying that this is a FCP/MAC problem.
Does anybody have any idea how I can smooth out this footage, any filters that I should apply and what would be the best settings to convert the original mpeg 4 and mpeg2 files to import into FCP?
The future of my weekly show is now under threat as they say unless this can be fixed they will pull the show straight away. -

If the movie is progressive, export as progressive.

In PAL only DV codec is lower field. If you exported it as any other codec, you got the field order wrong.
Check if FCP has added the shift fields filter to the footage, but without any info on your codec and sequence settings, it is hard to guess further. It is unlikely to be an problem with FCP other than operator error I am afraid. The mp4 file should have been upper field to start with.

Exporting to PAL DV codec in both Streamclip and Visual Hub in Visual Hub I’m exporting using the DV “Ready for FCP” checkbox.
I will try exporting progressive and then setting the field order in FCP that might fix it. -

Only do that if you want to throw away half your screen resolution. If you let me know what the sequence setting is, I can advise if the solution is to add the shift fields filter in FCP.

I think that the problem is because MPGStreamclip is trying to re-interlace the footage (Progressive) to output DV (Lower).
My suggestion is that you convert in MPGStreamclip to DV Progressive.
When you import it to FC will be recognized as Lower-first.

PS: DV needs to be always Lower-first “in Tape”.
In you computer you can decide the field order. -
The sequence which is output to DVCam tape is PAL, 720 x 576, Lower Field first (Even) Aspect Ratio CCIR601/DV PAL 5:4 Compressor DV PAL 100% Audio 48 Khz.
The final program is then recaptured into MPEG2 for Playout from the Stations Playbox System.
I have suggested that they give me the mpeg2 specs and I can encode it direct from the timeline but they insist that for the sake of consistency that they do it themselves in house. -
You start with PAL Progressive.
Convert it in MPGStreamclip to the codec you want, but keep it Progressive.
Being Progressive will work well in any Upper or Lower sequence in FC.
No problem to print it to DVCam.

Hi,
I came across your thread, and was wondering whether or not you solved the jittering problem you were having?
I know this is quite old now, but we are experiencing the same problem. We are using Playbox to play out our files, which caught my attention in this thread.
We are a not for profit organisation and get a lot of different content from many different remote organisations. We often don’t know the history behind the files, and sometimes it is next to impossible to contact anyone who knows.
Some of the files that come in are jittery, and we are trying to solve this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
