I am little confused with 59.94 fps business. I am working on a project shot by DVCPro HD 720p 59.94fps. Everything was smooth until output stage. I realized that DVCPro HD records the video as 29.97 fps. This means I am not be able to do accurate insert editing because for example, 01:00:00:24 on 59.94fps and 01:00:00:24 on 29.94fps is different spot.

I am confused that what exactly is 59.94? If it is fps why the tape can’t record as 59.94 fps?
The manual for DVC Pro HD deck refer 59.94 as frequencey not fps.

can someone describe what this 59.94 means?

and also any tip on outputting and insert editing to tape 59.94 fps timeline?

    thank you.

That is one of the most confusing things and I HATE that the engineers do this.

59.94 at 720p is always FRAMES per second. So 720p59.94 means 60fps. While 59.94 at 1080i is FIELDS per second…frequency. So 1080i59.94 means 30fps. Why do that? Why not call it 1080i29.97? I mean, AJA and Decklink settings in FCP refer to it as that. THEY get it.

Are you outputting to 720p? Then your deck should record 60fps. At 1080i you will be close…each frame becomes a field…or something like that.

[Kozo Okumura] “I realized that DVCPro HD records the video as 29.97 fps.”

DVCPRO HD at 720p does 60fps, at 1080i does 30fps. What are you outputting to? What format?

As Shane says, 720p is always 59.94 on tape. My guess is that you are looking for 59.94 time code. Well in order to share time with the rest of the NTSC based world, 59.94 tc only exists on computers. Most of the time, the tc is 29.97 so that you can dub 720p or transmit 720p in to 29.97 based system (satellite’s and the like). What it really means is that there are actually two frames for each tc number, 00:00:00:01 actually consists of two frames of video. You can see this in FCP if you change your timeline or captured quicktime movie to have a tc rate of 29.97 (don’t change the frame rate in your timeline, right click on the tc window next to the rt bubble on the top corner of your timeline. You will see a little drop down menu called 60@30. This is what will correspond to your 720p deck.

    Make smore sense?

Thank you for the responses. I am trying to output to AJ-HD1400, 720p, 59.94fps.
So, you guys are saying that I should be able to output as 59.94 fps to the tape? Right now, the deck only records as 29.97 fps. So, I should be able to change the deck setting to 59.94 fps, is that right?

    Is it in 720p mode?
