  Importing into FCP from P2 in PAL

  I’ve asked this question all over the place. I get sort of answers but I still don’t understand. Either I’m stupid or else FCP and HVX 200 have some sort of relational problem.

  Why is it that when you import 1080i/25P from a P2 into FCP (setting 1080i50) using list and capture and you analyse what you’ve just imported in tools you get Codec : DVCPRO HD 1080p25 medium quality. What does this medium quality mean? Is it the quality of the reading of the clip or the quality of the clip imported?
  ….and what setting should I put on the sequence, 1080p25 or 1080i50?
  White or super white?
  Movement filter optimale or medium?
  The QT imported has codec DVCPRO HD 1080i50.
  …and of course when I’ve finished the editing what format do I export it?

  I’m just starting derushing a feature so it’s pretty important I don’t introduce any unwanted compression into what I filmed with a Panasonic HVX 200 setting 1080i/25P.

  It means nothing. You’re not stupid, and FCP and HVX200 do not have a relational problem, it simply has no meaning. The Analyze Movie code in FCP clearly requires that it report the “quality” setting for the codec of any given analyzed clip or file, even when that has no actual meaning or relevance to a specific codec. By default, it is simply reporting your clip codec as being at Medium quality … back in the real world there is no Medium, nor is there any Best (or Worst) when dealing with a predefined codec such as DVCPRO HD. Ignore it, you are trying too hard!

  Regarding your 1080i/25p format … what you have shot is 25 PsF (progressive segmented frames) footage, which is 25 progressive frames encoded within a 50 interlaced field signal. It is both 50i AND 25p.

  Thanks for your reply. So it was just words. I’m cured.
  FCP is sometimes like a woman – Always right, even when she’s wrong.

  This means I can set the sequence on either 25p or 50i? Ditto for the final output of the project?

  This has been bugging me for two weeks.
