  • Need response ASAP! Will the quicktime render of a 9GB after effects animation playback/export normally in final cut?

    Hi,

I am working on the title animation sequence of a film. After rendering the sequence to quicktime, it comes to be a 9GB file.

The file is too large for the computer to handle and playback in quicktime stutters.

BUT, when I open after effects, import the (stutter-y) quicktime file and RAM preview, it plays smoothly. Although, the RAM preview also appears to only be able to handle 7 seconds.

When I import the quicktime into Final Cut, it stutters and claims drop frames. It doesn’t require rendering in Final Cut either, though I tried.

I need the animation sequence to play normally in final cut so it can be integrated with the rest of the film. So my question is, do I just trust that in the final rendering (putting back to tape or burning to a dvd) that it will play smoothly? Or do I need to be able to see it play smoothly in final cut.

I don’t really have time to re-render out of after effects (unless absolutely necessary).

It’s just weird that it would be fine in ram preview of after effects (albeit for only a short clip before it stops) and no where else.

I need this today, so any response asap would be helpful. Thank you!!!!

Are you rendering this out as an ANIMATION codec? Do you know that has a VERY HIGH data rate? One that would require a dang fast RAID to play back…talking over 300MB/s…if not 350-400MB/s. Animation is meant as a transport codec, or as one that you can use with transparency. For this to play smoothly in FCP you need to convert it to the format you are using…or render it. Then the RENDER file will be in that codec and should play smoothly.

RAM PREVIEW basically renders out the clip into RAM for playback.

Please give specifics for your format. When you say animations sequence, do you mean the material is in the Animation codec or something else? What exactly is it?

It really sounds as if your system and/or your drives are not fast enough to support this media.

    All the best,

what codec did you render to from AE, what’s your FCP sequence settings, what’s the final delivery format, how long is the title sequence, and what are the dimensions of the video.

And to repeat what someone else alluded to, what hard drive are you trying to play this from? If you answer “my internal system hard drive”
then that’s your problem, get it onto a RAID (a fast one, as has been said).

    Thanks everyone!

This response from a thread in the After Effects forum solved the issue and I’m good to go now–

“From your description, it sounds like you rendered out a high-quality HD file. I’ll guess it’s the Animation codec, best quality. Good for you.

Now to make it play smoothly in FCP, I’d simply Export the file from Quicktime Pro — which comes with FCP — in the codec you use in your FCP edit timeline.

Just exporting from QT made it play smoothly. Thank you for all your quick responses!
