It’s not accurate, and you have to use free run. If you don’t have the exact time code this is fairly useless. You don’t even know if the camera is running and how much preroll had occurred. And with manual sync, you better hope someone didn’t switch their cam off free run. Too many issues here. If you want to use it as a base for real logging later, then paper might be easier. I’ve wondered why there isn’t a transmitter reciever system via Bluetooth or wifi. The newton shor logger was great, but you could use a stylus to writeand that sped things up.

    Hi,

I have to say I disagree with Bret on this one, this is not is useless in fact I have found it very useful indeed.

I used it on a promo shoot on friday, true we did have to use time of day TC – but thats fine and something that I have done in the past on multi-cam shoots & you also avoid all the frame slipping nonsense that goes on with sony digibetas.

I did always made sure that the cameras were running for a little longer than usual before starting the action, but I found that once I has synced the camera to the phone in the morning it stayed in sync all day! (give or take a second)

On saturday I batched all of the clips from the XML which came out of my phone and had no problems at all with a 3 sec pre roll, as a bonus all the clips had lovely labels and to be honest I would normally have spent the good part of the day labeling it all so for that alone it was great.

I also printed out a log sheet just to see what it looked like and is handy if you’re like me and like scribbling on the notes.

I spent the day today logging films for the clips that I want (I don’t get much time of – the glamour of teley!!) -what I did (I was quiet chuffed coming up with this!!) was that I started the DVD and then synced the phone to the timecode in screen, I then watched and any bits that I wanted I started logging and then stopped logging later. It’s a shame you can’t change the in TC if you’re a bit late but according to the website thats coming soon.

It also says on the website that a bluetooth version is in the pipes and comes out with V3 of iphone.

newton shot logger is about 10 years old, and I don’t think they even make it anymore – it was also mega pricey at about $500 if I remember right.

So I’ve got to say that it so far has saved me so much time and it’s just gonna get better – fingers crossed.
