  • Best seq. setting for working with stills for Web-only output?

Posted by Ann Malcolm on May 27, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Please help. I’ve researched on Creative Cow and elsewhere, and I’ve tried so many different ways to set up my sequence but nothing is quite working. I’m obviously missing something.

My project is solely stills/photos with transitions and some text for a Web-only output. I’d like the final project to have the flexibility of being either small (320×240) or larger.

I’m using FCP Easy Setup: Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC 48kHz

I have no idea what to do w/my sequence settings. I’ve changed them around so many times I’m utterly confused. One thing I do know is my field dominance is “None” — outside of that… please help!

What’s the problem? Describe what’s happening. Also, we need more info about your system: what kind of Mac, what version FCP & QT, what kind of storage, how are you monitoring, etc.?

    Thanks for the reply.

I’ve tried various sequence settings — 4:3, NTSC DV 3:2, most give me a squished image in FCP. When I output to QT Movie the product is still squished and when I then compress (Sorenson Squeeze) it looks relatively okay.

So, I figured my PAR is wrong and when I adjust it in FCP to “square” PAR with a 720×480 NTSC DV (3:2) the QT looks excellent but the compression looked off.

I’m struggling with the sequence settings. Should my FCP images be squished in the Canvas/Viewer as long as I know the final compression product will be accurate?

If I’m working with solely stills should I have NTSC 4:3 or DV 3:2 or neither? When I set the Frame Size Aspect Ratio to Multimedia Large (which isn’t large enough but thought I’d try it) then everything needs rendering. When I set the pixel aspect ratio to Square rendering is still required. So, my TL (Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC) settings don’t match apparently.

    Thanks again.
