    Hey folks,

I know this is probably more of an OSX issue in the end, but in case there’s an FCP solution, as this is where it’s based, I thought i’d ask.

Simply, I’ve got a sequence with a test grade on it. I want to regrade. So, i go into the render folder in FCP documents, and delete the renders for that project, and empty the trash. Imagine my surprise then, when I go back into the sequence, and most of it still contains the rendered grade (all just temp 3 way color correct effects).

So, I choose reconnect media to find where the render files are, and they’re in a .trashes hidden folder on my Raid. Hmm. So – I download Houdini to show hidden folders etc, go to the .trashes folder on my Raid, and there’s nothing in there!!

Next line of thought, did I maybe pre-delete these render files a while ago, before I changed Macs, and not empty the trash before switching? Maybe, but I hooked up the old Mac, emptied the trash, went into the hidden folder again, and still nothing there. And the renders are still there.

So, my question is, how the hell do I get rid of them? It’s a 30 minute sequence at uncompressed HD, and I’d kinda like the space back!

Is there an Avid equivalent of Media Tool for FCP? So I can manage the data used in a project? Or is it just supposed to be as simple as deleting folders in the FCP Documents folder?

Or is there just a way to force delete files I can’t find?

    Thanks in advance.

    John

I’m still working in FCS 1, but In the Tools menu you find Render Manager where you can check the render files you want to delete.

Thanks for the reply. I actually had no idea that there was a render manager in the tools menu. Alas, however, no sign on the ghostly render files.

Oddly, in another project where that sequence was being worked on, it now claims the render files are happily inside their folder in the render folder in FCP Documents – and I’ve been over and over it, even searched in Finder for one of the render file names, but there’s just nothing showing up…

    Grrrr. (Thanks for your help).

    Hi John,
Weird issue. No idea were can be the render files, but one time Jeremy found the render files inside the FC Application package.

I found a small bug with final cut that most people have been wondering…where those hidden files are. strangely for me the answer was right under my nose and it took me a couple years to find it.

    – Locate the directory you installed final cut to (most likely your applications folder)
    – right click Final Cut Pro.app and “Show Package Contents”
    – go into the “Contents” directory and then go into the “MacOS” directory located inside there

you may notice a strange cluster f*** of directories with names of projects you are currently working on. On top of that, you may also notice the interesting folders “Audio Render Files” and “Render Files”. I had about 120 gigs of space being taken up by these stupid files and im glad i found them finally.

I too have found these files, but my question is… Why are they there? I have my settings set to write the files to a different drive, and yet they often show up here.

    Very strange.
