timebase off? green lines? audio out of sync? what gives?
Hello, I have a strange problem. I’ve been editing a pilot and working weeks on it. I do each scene on an individual timeline (the way I organize my edits) and when I am happy, I paste the final scene into a master timeline that will be the final cut. I shot 1080 24P so I set my sequence settings to match that.
About 16 scenes in I pasted a final edit from an indv timeline to my master timeline. The audio was off sync, which was odd because it was just a copy/paste (should have been exactly the same) so I thought maybe my mac was glitching or I maybe moved an audio track without realizing it.. Checked the original edit, all good. Copy and pasted again.. the pasted footage was off.. So I restarted, maybe my mac was just in need of it. After a restart, still pasting over strangely. I checked eveything I could to figure out what was wrong. I discovered that some of my individual sequences for my indv edits were set to a timebase of 29.97. HOW? All my edits have been on a timebase of 23.98. I didn’t make any changes to my overall settings? But I thought, “no biggie” because when I pasted other 29.97 edits into my 23.98 master timeline, they pasted over just fine. It was just this one that messed up and started this whole issue.
I noticed that when I pasted this troublesome edit to the master timeline, it had green lines in the blue line of the audio track (which weren’t there before I pasted). I made no audio edits.. nothing had to render.. and they ONLY appeared when I pasted over to the original 23.98 timeline. Where its green, the audio and video sync perfect, like before I copied it over. Where it is blue, it goes out of sync.
So why does this copy/paste not work, and others do? And why do the green lines show up? Its a simple copy/paste, NO CHANGES made. I wouldn’t have even noticed I had sequences with different timebases if it wasn’t for this one pesky edit that copy/pastes over out of sync.
Now, out of 20+ edits, I have about 6 that somehow magically became 29.97 and of those, 3 are changing when I copy/paste over, the other 3 copy/paste over just fine. What is the variable here that is causing my edits not to paste over properly? I don’t understand the randomness of the green lines? You can’t change a timebase in a sequence once there is footage there, so the only two options are to export my 29.97 as a flattened quicktime at 24P and bring it back in. OR, re-edit those pesky scenes.

You have green lines in the video track. Are you sure that all of your footage is 23.98? I suspect that some of your footage is 29.97.
What format is your footage? how did you remove pulldown to get it to be 23.98?

everything was shot 1080 24p, all logged from P2 cards to final cut pro. I matched the timeline to the footage. I supposed its possible our other shooter changed settings but I am pretty positive that didn’t happen. I am new to using HD so not sure how pulldown works. Ive used FCP for years, and never had this problem before. Once I set my settings, I am usually fine. And its just these few clips that are acting up. Everything else is working great. Ill check and see if some of the source footage is 29.97. But we shot all 24P.
