  • Sequence shows “Media Offline” but plays fine

Posted by Dan Herz on May 25, 2009 at 11:49 pm

When i opened my FCP project, it showed a dozen or so clips in the sequence as offline media. When I play the sequence, the clips are there and it plays fine. When I try to reconnect media, it finds the clip and when I click reconnect, nothing happens. As I said, it plays fine, but this is concerning. In order to finish the project, I need to copy several versions of the video to a portable hard drive and deliver to someone to finish the edit. I am concerned about delivering a project with “Media Offline” showing. Can anyone help or explain?
One more piece of info…when I “zoom in” on the timeline…and as the clips appear larger in the timeline, the “offline media” in the clip goes away…very weird.
    Thanks

The media can be gone, but it will still play render files.

Are you sure a drive isn’t gone?

Try trash your thumbnail cache files.

    All the best,

Tom, can you please elaborate? I don’t understand what you are recommending.
    Thanks

You should have a folder called “Thumbnail cache files” (usually in the same place than your render files, autosaves, etc.). In it you’ll find 2 files called “Final Cut Pro Thumbnail Cache” and “Final Cut Pro Thumbnail Data”. He’s telling you to delete those (or move them to the desktop, if you’re scared of deleting stuff). Of course, do this with FCP closed.
