Black border appearing all around already edited sequence. Help?
Hello all,
I am currently editing a wedding that was shot and logged by amateurs (who also started editing and wanted me to finish it for them) with two different types of cameras, and I am having a doozy of a time trying to get them to cooperate with Final Cut Pro. I completed the wedding video semi-hassle-free, but the reception is giving me problems. The image had the wrong aspect ratio so I opened the sequence settings and tried to match the reception’s sequence settings to the wedding’s settings. I was able to match all of the settings except the “Editing Timebase,” which seems to be uncontrollable. The successful wedding’s settings for the Editing Timebase is 23.98 while the reception’s Editing Timebase is 29.97. I am not sure that this is the issue, however.
The visible problem I am having is in editing the two different cameras’ footage together and having the image the same size. One of the camera’s footage is the perfect aspect ratio–the same as the wedding video– and the other camera, for some reason, is the same ratio, but it appears is at least half as big in the Canvas, and it is surrounded by black. I tried exporting the video to see if the problem simply fixes itself, but it didn’t.
Do you know if there is any way to make sure the two clips match in size and ratio so that the viewing of the movie will run reasonably smoothly?

KyleP.S.–I am still pretty unfamiliar with a lot of Final Cut Pro, and I don’t know what a lot of the super technical terms/ names of certain problems are. So, if you have any suggestions or questions, you may need to take me step by step as to how I can go about fixing my problems.

It’s very possible one camera was shot 16:9 anamorphic and the other was shot 16:9 letterbox. So what you are seeing is a letterboxed 4:3 image dropped into a 16:9 image. FCP matches up the height and you’re left with black on the sides, plus since it’s letterboxed, there’s black at top and bottom. All you can do is blow the image up 33% to fill. It’s going to be softer, but the amateur screwed up royally by shooting letterbox.

double click clip in timeline to import to viewer, then click motion tab in viewer, you will see the option to resize.

What we’re trying to get you to do, fundamentally, is convert the bad video to the better video’s native format. Render it all, export it as self-contained movies, reimport all of the new media, discard the original so it’s no longer cluttering up your project.
