    Hello

I have a RED project which i am about to start editing and from RedRushes i created ProRes clips which are 24fps 1920×1080 progressive.

I have a BlackMagic HD extreme card and a reference monitor setup however i cannot get it to playback. Is this because 24 is not a supported frame rate – this is what theDP shot in for some annoying reason and once picture is locked i plan to color correct using the reference monitor.

I would like to get playback to work with the Sony reference monitor but worst case scenario i just look at still frame when C in COLOR and edit just in FCP.

    Any Thoughts

    thanks

    Lisa

    Wow
a number of us told you not to work at 24.0 because it would not play on some monitors and would never playback on a CRT.

Maybe you need to go back and look at some of the posts again, all of this was laid out for you multiple times by myself, david and uli.

    Dear Gary

I did read that indeed but was also advised by multiple people to stick with 24 so i did – did u not read that part of the chain? Now i am just asking anyone if they have some insight on the blackmagic card I have and if there are any tricks or workarounds i can use…I am well aware of the original posts i just wanted some helpful feedback about what is possible (i.e. grading using COLOR while frame is parked).

First let me just say that I have gotten and even given some great advice on these forums and am very appreciative to you and everyone else in this forum for taking the time to respond to posts and participate in this forum. Having said that I do wish to speak on something here.

Honestly Gary i mean no disrespect to you or your colleagues but you seem to hate on me or beat me up / kick my ass in this forum – i think others too or maybe iam mixing you up with other weird threads in which people get into it with each other and things become nasty.

I understand especially since i have made some hasty posts that were not all clear and rambled on but i think some of this is due to the fact that your responses have been vague sometimes…like there are a lot of mistakes one can make if all settings for instance in redrushes are not set properly…I find I’m posting more follow up questions and having them answered by others (i.e david & uli) because your replies only provoke more questions / confusion…if myself and other newbies are annoying you then why do u even bother participating?

RedAlert / Redrushes have limited user info and other forums are not so great…after having done searches on the cow forums for my question i figure why not ask some professionals…you get so pissed at people for not being experts it seems – why dont u just have a SUPER AWESOME PRO forum then and just not read / respond to these forums??

RED is complicated / confusing and a whole new world its not like iam asking you how to log a clip!

Anyways i hope you dont take this the wrong way – I do really appreciate your time it just sucks to have someone be SO snarky at you and provide answers that only leave you looking for more answers. Its just this negative vibe i’m feeling and look what can I say I’m young and new to this profession and hungry for knowledge – i am on this forum looking to fill in the blanks that a manual or lack there of cant provide. This business has so many formats and things to keep in mind that its extra frustrating when u get hated on when you are struggling to wrap your head around something.

I read the manual, i do searches for answers but i love the cow still – i buy the dvd’s i read the mag and i read the forums all the time so hopefully you all dont hate me now : )

Yeah I did, I have read your posts in multiple forums.
I even corrected Uli to say 23.98 was the only timebase you should use because of the very problem you are having- people do not cut 24fps material at 24.0, they cut at 23.98 in the US because that is what all of the playback and NLE equipment is geared to handle.

On your Hardware NOT being able to handle the frame rate you are working at- We cannot help you when you don’t even know what your hardware can do. Didn’t Uli and David and I all tell you that you needed to test, test, test? Not to mention next time don’t cheap out on the hardware, you have to have tools that will allow you to handle anything that comes your way.

Lisa the only thing you need to change at this point is to convert the footage to 23.98.
Do this either at the point you convert to ProRes or on files that are already converted can be changed in Cinema Tool by opening each file and clicking on the conform button then changing the frame rate to 23.98. I do not recommend batch processing timebase conforms unless YOU have done it before.

Finally because you now owe a large number of beers to Uli in Germany, David in Canada and me on an airplane somewhere –hire someone to assist and guide you thru the process.

Understand that the process of working with RED footage is not that hard if you are diligent about testing at every step of the process and you have a working knowledge of HD post production.

Wow Cinema Tools is amazing! How does it do the conform SO fast?? Anyone know how it is able to do this – how would it compare to using AE in terms of results – obviously it would take longer to perform..i also did a test making the 24 fps material 29.97 – which it also did lightening fast – but i did notice the duration of each qt file shortened when i did this operation.

Anyways, thanks for the advise Gary – i had never used this app before.

    best

[lisa rolley] “Wow Cinema Tools is amazing! How does it do the conform SO fast??”

because all it is doing is telling QT to read the file at a different frame rate- it is only changing the header of the file to do this.

[lisa rolley] “i also did a test making the 24 fps material 29.97 -“

    NO NO NO!!!
that is NOT the way to make 29.97 material, there is a process to add additional frames called adding pulldown-

No i know it was ONLY a TEST – for sh*t sake ya know just wanted to see what would happen…I know what pulldown is and I use AE usually to do this or remove it when needed.

Anyways not sure i really understand what exactly Cinema Tools is doing in the conform process but i will look it up online to see if i can get the scoop – just curious to learn further about this.
