Setting Scratch Disks for Projects
Posted by Ryan Newton on May 16, 2009 at 8:34 pmHi,
I was curious is to if there is a way so that FCP 6 automatically switches scratch disks for a project. For example I have separate scratch disks for Project A and Project B and want FCP to set the location to A when I open project A, and to B when I open project B.
Does anybody know a way of doing this, or do you just have to adjust them manually?
Thanks.

May 17, 2009 at 12:02 amSorry but you have to do it manualy. Many people have wanted that feature for a long time, maybe the next version of FCP.

May 17, 2009 at 2:43 amYou can do this if you create different users on your Mac, then in FCP’s system preferences you can designate one scratch disk for the first user, quit FCP, log on as the second user and designate a new scratch disk. Whenever you sign on, FCP would use only the scratch disk for that user.

May 17, 2009 at 10:59 amWhat about using environmental variables? I know next to nothing about this but reading through the Shake manual it seems that you can define $foldernames for the system.
I’ve been meaning to try this in FCP for ages as I too think the scratch disk settings in FCP should be a project thing rather than system wide.
Try this. Tell FCP that the scratch settings are $scratch and then using terminal (I can’t remember how to do this but I’m sure they’re are people here who can!) each time you change projects set the environmental $scratch to the scratch folders for that particular project.
If it works please let us know.

Yes this should be as should the Project Settings. But they’re not, they’re global to the application. As someone already mentioned in this thread, this has been a request for a long time, but it has never been added by Apple.

May 18, 2009 at 3:24 amOne (free) way is to use Jon Chappell’s Preference Manager app as a project launcher for your FCP projects.
https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htmOne less free way is to use the commercial app Edit Mule to do the same thing
https://www.editmule.com/As has already been said, despite a user base thats been baying for this since the beginning, this is not a built in feature of FCP … you get used to it.
