Still image frame rates?
Hello,
My boyfriend is doing a stop motion animation using a digital SLR – in case it’s important, it’s a Canon Rebel EOS XTI. He is having a problem when importing his images into FCP. He wants his project to be 24fps since it’s animation, but when he sets his sequence to 24fps and drags his images into the sequence, FCP makes him render. Turns out when he apple+9s his images, it shows that they have a frame rate of 29.97. First of all, I’m confused about how a still image has a frame rate. Second of all, shouldn’t it by default be the same frame rate as the 24fps sequence?
I haven’t had a chance myself to fiddle with it, I’ve just been talking to him over the phone, but I read somewhere that the still images will take on the frame rate of the open sequence when they are imported. However, having a 24fps sequence open when importing did not change anything, the still image frame rate was still 29.97.
Has anyone come upon this issue before or know how to fix it?

Try converting to quicktimes in After Effects. Import the pictures as an image sequence into a composition with the settings you want 23.976 fps resolution (HD or SD) and render to the codec you want to work with ProRes, DVCProHD etc.

Thanks for the clarification, Dave. Where can I change the defaualt frame rate for image sequences? I can’t seem to find it in user preferences or AV settings.

Thanks Warren… I think I may try this. I’ve been reading that Quicktime Pro can do something similar, but I don’t have that program and I DO have AE. Thanks!

Forget about “Still frame rate”.
What you have to decide is the “Still Frame Duration”.
This you need to set it BEFORE IMPORTING the stills to FC.
Go to Users Preferences> Editing> STILL FRAME DURATION.
That set the number of frames that the still will be played in the time-line, WHATEVER THE TIME-BASE of the sequence.
If you set a duration of (ie) 3 frames, and your sequence is 24fps, you know that every second of the clip will have 24/3= 8 stills.
if you work in a 29.98 sequence, your clip would have 29’98/3= 10 stills per second (more or less).But this have nothing to do with the need or rendering/no rendering the sequence. That is more related with the sequence codec, the size of the stills, the number of stills, etc
You should increase the “Still Cache” in the System Setting> Memory & Cache.
This will helps you to manage a bigger number of stills.

We’re going to waste a lot of time translating.Stop motion animation in FCP has been a popular topic for years, there are hundreds of searchable threads and many tutorials on the Net. Techniques, workflows, setups, shooting strategies, everything has been invented many dozens of times but perfected only a few times. FCP will create 24fps sequences but that’s not a good idea unless you know your delivery will be 24fps.
Creating animation at 24fps has not been an efficient production workflow for many decades. The economics of on-two shooting become immediately apparent if you do the research.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I’m going to keep posting myself, since I’m helping out with a lot of the post on this project. It just so happened that I was at work when the issue came up so we were not in the same room at the time. There shouldn’t be any “translation” problems.
I know there are a lot of animation + FCP tutorials, but there was an issue that neither of us could find an answer to through search engines.
And does on-two shooting = shooting on 2s? That’s what he’s doing, only not at 30fps/15 stills, but at 24fps/12 stills.

Hi Dave, that info was very helpful to me as well. I am wondering – and this must sound quite stupid – how I go about changing the frame rate for image sequences in FCP? I have not been able to find that setting option.

Whenever I add an image to a final cut sequence rendering time increases to the point where its out of control. Currently I am editing a 30 minute speech, 1440 by 1080, prores (proxy). I want to integrate images into the sequence and add a watermark. I can convert the image files to anything I want, but want to maintain transparency for the watermark. I have tried TIFF, PNG’s, JPEG’s etc. When I look at the frame rate for these files it is 24fps while the sequence is 30fps…is this is what is increasing the rendering times.

When I export Image Sequence through timeline in FCP7(dimension is : 720X576)but the problem is after export the dimention of image are change in another dimention like 768X576. I trying every image seq like- jpg,png,tga,tiff but all are exporting same ratio (768×576). So it’s creat a lots of problem in GFX section.I need help regarding this.please………….
