cropping even 1 pixel neutralizes line 21….. why?
running fcp 6.03
I got a closed captioning overlay from automatic synch.
you put it on video track 2, then crop it (leaving just the top area) so
that the closed captioning comes through without having to own expensive
hardware. I highly recommend it.but this is the weird part, adding that crop in fcp gets rid of the
data lines that show up as it plays (the cc info) anyone know why that is?
it’s not blurring the image. and even if i just add the crop to 1 pixel
it messes it up. all the other static lines in the cc lines are there, just
the data disappears.very weird.
now if i take it into after effects or motion and do it, it works just fine.
so I’m rendering out of that, then bringing it in to final cut to edit to tape.
this step should not be necessary though.any ideas or alternatives?

What happens if you use a 4-point garbage matte in FCP? Do you get the line 21 captions, or do they disappear?

FC crops by percentage.
Very difficult to control the number of pixels you are really cropping.
I would set “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.

Chris, IIRC its simply because FCP doesn’t preserve closed captioning data on rendered footage … and of course the instant you crop your video it needs rendering.

it does work with an animation file with a alpha channel though.
