  • Exporting HD P2 footage to DV tape.

    Hey,

So I’m working on a documentary for my college’s award show, and the EP’s of the award show want to use some of our HD footage in a package for their SD show.

What do I tell them as far as exporting goes? I’m shooting on an HVX200 in 720/24pn, and they want to export to miniDV tape in standard deff. They’re worried that rendering/compressing footage will take too much time (quick turnaround needed), but their other option was hiring another shooter and shooting on a DVX, which isn’t going to happen. I plan on giving them a copy of all the raw data from the cards so they can do with it what they please.

So, the question is, what is the best way of editing HD P2 footage with the intent of exporting it to a miniDV tape (we only have SD decks).

Best way of shooting? Well you have 3 options. Shoot with everything toward the center so that when you crop off the sides and go 4:3 SD you don’t have to pan and scan. Shoot how you like and pan and scan the footage to go 4:3. Or shoot how you like and then downconvert to anamorphic 16:9 SD. The last is my choice. It’s the simplest, and who wants to think I’m 4:3 anymore anyway.

But you’re going to have to convert the footage somehow. No easy answer there. Dub it, render it, etc.

It’s actually being exported into 16:9 anamorphic, so shooting it in respects to 4:3 shouldn’t be a real issue. I have heard that if you nest the hd sequence into an sd timeline, you can render it and then export it just fine. I have also heard that media manager might be able to compress all the media before it hits the bin. Still, I am unsure the best way to go about that.

i edited 4 P2 projects last year, ingested into FCP and edited, simply output to DV via FW.
I use a Sony HDDV 10MU Deck, it is flaweless. personally the new sony camera with XML and Tape is what I am aiming for. best of both worlds, no issue with Archiving.

    Hi Joshua,
I think that you only need to drop your p24 P2 footage in a DV NTSC p24 Anamorphic sequence and render.
On Printing to Video FC should add the Pulldown.

This is where you put in a procurement request
A Kona 3 will playout your 720P 23.98 footage to dbeta or miniDV providing you have SDI I/O on your decks. It will do this in real time adding the pulldown and allowing you to select anamorphic, center crop or letterbox.
