Rendering Problem
Posted by Glenn Rogers on May 1, 2009 at 11:14 amHi Guys
I just bought some clips from Digital Juice and tried to use them on the timeline in FCP. Used the first clip mov with 1-2 of my local footage and rendering was fine. Used the second clip and it renders to about 20% then stops with message – General Error.
Took out the audio and tried again..this time it renders till about 60% and then it stops to say – General Error.
I’m wondering how just 2 clips can possibly be too hard to render when people use so many in their movies.
Please help.
Thanks

May 1, 2009 at 11:29 amBeing a .mov you shouldn’t have problems.
The file may be corrupted. Try to transcode it to Proress or so.

May 1, 2009 at 2:20 pmI may be way off here… but what version of OS X are you running. I had no end of rendering headaches in FCP and Motion running 10.5.6. A little research revealed that Apple rewrote the video drivers in 10.5.5… which was a major disaster… so they rewrote them again for 10.5.6… which was a minor disaster. I down graded to 10.5.4 and that solved most of my rendering woes.

May 1, 2009 at 8:21 pmI’ve got 10.5.6 too…well..thanks for that! As it happens..after i had that problem i just shut down and started all over again and guess what….?? It started behaving!
Was really pissed off though cos i spent top dollar for the Digital Juice stuff and if i wasn;t going to be able to use even 2 of the clips i was going to end my affair with FCP.
For now, though..we are back in the saddle, hoping that that was nothing more than just a lover’s quarrel.

gee Glenn, I suspect you will find it difficult to stay in the saddle of any editing system if you are so easily unseated. Restarts, preference management and system management generally are just part of keeping the saddle oiled and supple.
The reason we sit the saddle is so others can fall into their armchairs and pay us for the rougher more exciting ride.

May 2, 2009 at 2:32 amHi Glen,
As Michael points if the system is not optimized the applications won’t run smooth.
90% of the problem when running FC comes from a poorly maintained system.
If you just come from PC land there are a few routines that you must learn in you want to have a happy life with your Mac.
When you have problems, restart. Or better restart in “Safe mode”.
Repair permissions whenever you install anything.
Every week or two run an application to re-build your directories (DiskWarrior, TechTools, DriveWizard,..)
No hungs, no crashes, o need to trash preferences,..
