June 25, 2007 at 4:52 pmDo the fire flies have to affect the objects around them? If not, then you could probably just add a simple light, play with the parameters, and move it around. Maybe add some particles to it?

June 26, 2007 at 6:13 amColor correct your clip to transform it into a night scene – many ways to do this, but basically you’ll be either be using levels, or hue and lightness adjustments, or curves, or a combination of several, etc. For the fireflies, I’d be tempted to create a small 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 pixel object (or whatever size you want the flies to be) in photoshop, import them into after effects and add a slight yellow glow. Duplicate the layer and offset it to add several flies to your scene. for realism, animate the glow to make it fade in and out, and animate the intensity. make it a 3d object and animate it slightly towards the camera for depth realism.

June 26, 2007 at 4:06 pmI hear the oft-neglected Foam effect can give good results for simulating a swarm of insects.
As for the night look, I would definitely recommend working with Hue/Saturation and Levels. You’re aiming for a darker, bluer and less saturated look. You may also want to use Curves to bring some contrast back in to the shadows/highlights. You could also try laying a dark blue solid at the top of the layer stack set to Multiply, which will work much better if you turn linear blending and at least 16bpc on in your project settings.
