    Hi all,
Quick background on the current project: Client’s legal dept has asked for a favour. They have an impending court case about a neighbour dispute and need me to compile a ‘best of’ DVD based on several hours worth of video that one of the parties took.

They gave me the clips in DVD format, so I’ve converted them to mpeg using mpeg streamclip. However when I import them into FCP, the audio disappears, even though it’s there when I play back the clips in QT. So my question is, where the hell’s my audio?

Slightly concerned as the deadline is looming!

    Thanks in advance

    Neil

    Hi Neil,
[Neil Weaver] “They gave me the clips in DVD format, so I’ve converted them to mpeg using mpeg streamclip”
Your MPGs have audio embed (MP2) and FC can not play it.
Go to MPGstreamclip and De-mux them.
After you need to convert the MP2 audio to AIFF. You can do it with MPGStreamclip too (Export audio).

    Hi Rafael,
Thanks for replying – I thought it might be something to do with muxing, but it’s not really my area – hence the panicky post!

Am re-ingesting the footage as QT movies which work with FC, but I’ve noticed the file sizes are huge. looks like I’ll have to try your solution!

    Cheers

[Neil Weaver] ” I thought it might be something to do with muxing,”
Exactly. The video/audio are muxed and you have to demux it.
If you only want to cut in FC, MPG can work but for any other process is better to go QT, as you are doing.
Files will be bigger but you will avoid problems.
To which codec are you converting the MPGs?

Converting them to QT movs which are of course working fine in FC. As the footage is mostly hours of a locked off camera with the audio occasionally picking up the neighbour doing something weird or abusive, picture quality isn’t an issue for a (welcome) change. I’ve made the frame size as small as possible to keep the file sizes down so hopefully it’s a smooth ride to the export now!
    Thanks again,
    Neil
