or similar camera using CF cards and the m2t files?

I have a friend with FCE and an HVR-Z7U and I’m trying to help him. He’d rather not shell out for Final Cut Studio, but a workflow that takes forever to transcode isn’t acceptable….

I’ve seen that FCE is NOT compatable with the sony camera, but that you can get the 3rd party product Clipwrap to import them. I understand it transcodes them into Apple Intermediate Codec, which obviously takes more time to transcode, and uses more space.

Is anyone doing this? I’m wondering how long the transcoding takes. How much more room do the files take? For example, you can get over 2 hours of HDV onto one 32gb CF card. This would transfer fairly quickly if just re-wrapping were necessary, but with the transcoding, how much more space is needed and how much longer does this take?

Does FCP have the same limitations? I know that Sony provides a plugin to use with FCP that doesn’t work with FCE, but does it still need to transcode the footage into AIC? Doesn’t FCP handle HDV natively, so the transcoding isn’t needed, just the rewrapping?

And what about printing to tape? Does this require another long transcode?

    Thanks for the help!
