I have a dvd that I converted using HANDBRAKE to a MP4. The MP4 plays fine when using a player. When I try to import into FCP, the message: FILE ERROR: UNKNOWN FILE pops up. What do I do to get this working? Thanks.

MP4 is not an editing format.
    FC prefers .mov’s.
Most of the people around use MPEGStreamclip (free) to make this kind of conversions.
Export your MPEG-2 to any of the traditional video codec that works well in FC.
I would recommend you from DV50 up.
