  NTSC, Interlace, Field Dominace, and Final Output/Distribution

  If I’m viewing footage that appears interlaced on my computer screen, will it appear to be interlaced when distributed on DVD and viewed on a standard television? Or, is my computer displaying these interlaced frames as progressive… ?

  I can change the field dominance to NONE which removes the interlacing, but you can see jagged edges between contrasting elements (hue, saturation, luminance). Does changing the field dominance to NONE screw up the way it’s viewed on a tube-style TV? How’s this going to effect the footage if it’s viewed on a flat-screen LCD? Is it common to render out multiple videos with different settings depending on how they’re going to be viewed? (De-interlaced for web, interlaced for DVD, etc, ?)

  The footage is standard def, 4:3, 29.97 and was captured directly from the camera and into FCP via firewire using FCP’s NTSC easy setup.

  I know I should be using a monitor to get an accurate view of the final project, but right now, I can’t afford one.

  Any ideas?

  Computer monitors cannot properly display interlaced footage. If the source footage is interlaced and the final destination is interlaced don’t deinterlace it or mess w/the field order anything like that. You might make it look better on your computer monitor, but it will look horrible on a TV. Even hooking a TV up to your computer using your camera as the go between is better than nothing. If you need to make a version for the web then use Compressor to make a deinterlaced version for that.
