    Hello there,

I’m working on a documentary shooting primarily with the HDV Canon XH-A1, with the Video Rate of 23.98, frame size 1440 * 1080, compressor HDV 1080p24.

The project codec is HDV 1080i60.

Recently I filmed a key interview using the HDX 900. The Video rate is 29.97, frame size 1280 * 1080, and the compressor is DVCPRO HD 1080p30. When shooting we used Firestore so I have the QTs ready to go.

I’m a but stumped on the best way to proceed. Should I just use mixed formats? Or should I re-render the footage shot with the HDX 900? Any advice?

    Many thanks,

    Paul

[Paul Lovelace] “Recently I filmed a key interview using the HDX 900. The Video rate is 29.97, frame size 1280 * 1080, and the compressor is DVCPRO HD 1080p30.”

That’s the wrong compressor. It should be DVCPro HD 1080i/60. That camera does not shoot 1080p that I’m aware of. The HDX-900 does not have Firewire out that I’m aware of, it’s a tape based camera.

When we have mixed rate formats, we ingest everything to one format on the way in. I would not take the DVCPro HD material down to HDV though. I would bring everything in to ProRes and work in that codec.

Thanks so much for your response.

We did indeed shoot to tape, but also used the Firestore at the same time. It would be great to avoid renting a deck and just use the transferred QTs as the master clips.

Someone else suggested we use the ProRes codec. Does that mean all of the footage we captured using the HDV codec would need to be redigatized? Or is there a way to convert what is already logged and loaded?

    Thx again,

    Paul

You can set your render in the HDV sequence to ProRes and convert just the Firestore files to ProRes.

You don’t want to transcode your HDX 900 footage to HDV.

Walter’s method of transcoding to ProRes at the injest for all mixed format shows is the best idea. However, if you are mostly HDV and captured that way, then try the render setting option.

I have a question about this as well… My workflow is really sporatic also.

I shoot mainly DVCPRO HD (720 or 1080i) from Hvx200. If I pull in clips from other formats, should I convert it all to ProRes or convert the odd balls to DVCPro? I occasionally have to mix DVCPro with DV also…

As I understand FCP thus far, it is best to have all the footage in the same format to get the best output, correct? And do certain formats compresser faster/cleaner than others in Compressor?

    Banging out my workflow,
