Gluetools and Compressor
I’m downloading the software and preparing some tests…. but in the mean time, does anyone have experiences to offer using Gluetools to convert DPX files to ProRes for offline editing? And then re-conforming at 2K for online in a Flame?
Primarily I’m wondering how Compressor deals with converting LOTS of DPX into Quicktimes, stability, multi-core processing, etc….

GT uses its own codec for handling the DPX wrapping, So you do not covert to ProRes, but stay in the GT workflow.
as you can see – it allows you to choose the frame size to be used in editing, with the original DPX files being referenced by the plug in.
As for handling the content- keep it organized on a shot by shot basis, there is a 10,000 file per folder limit in the OS (about 7 minutes per folder at 24 fps) and I really recommend to not try and reach it.

Thanks Gary, but that still requires your system to read and translate the DPX on the fly, correct? Which means fast storage.
It’s a high stress edit, giving him ProRes files would mean less room for technical hiccups.

no you can deliver to Bob’s flavor of the codec for playback which runs in full RTX mode.
but your guy will need his own copy to run it, the app is keyed to the MAC address of each computer.
I do this with stuff I cut on my laptop – convert DPX > 720p for edit – then conform the 720 project back into DPX for the finish- since it has to be graded from the raw content anyway.

Sorry Gary, I’m a little confused: You Import the 2K DPX into Compressor, export out 720 DPX with the Gluetools interface, and use those file sequence for editing?
What’s bumming me out, say I REALLY need ProRes from my DPX: I’m finding that if I try and crop my 2K to 1080 in Compressor… Compressor starts freezing frames halfway through and garbling things up.

Wow, Bob (or GlueTools) found and is fixing the problem. That’s great. Customer support means a lot…. especially to us users used to the Stone Wall that is Apple.

Is there really a 10,000 file limit? In MacOS X? I haven’t noticed this. But in our facility we access a SAN where finished reels have up to 30,000 files in each folder. (32000 files correspond to 2000 feet in 35mm).
GlueTools QT is dog slow opening sequences as QT or in FCP, over GigE. On a fast fibre connection its better. But playing back 2k DPX through FCP even with an array that is 2k capable would be slow I think.
You’re right about converting to ProRes. But then have you tried using Color to convert from DPX to QT ProRes. It is really fast, preserves TC in the DPX and works fine even over GigE or a Firewire drive. We use it all the time.
Other alternatives are Blackmagic Framelink or AJA converter. Both need the respective card installed.
But if Bob is giving you a fix for your Compressor issue then that’s great. The best feature of Gluetools is definitely Bob.

There was in the previous versions of OSX, never bothered to check on leopard.
I do it more for the issues with the various other tools that may use the content – like moving them to a PC edit of finishing system.I keep them under that since most editors now use faster cuts it is easier to keep the content organized correctly.
