  capture from digi beta via firewire (sony j30)

  i am aware that capturing footage from a digi beta via the firewire straight from a sony J30 deck into FCP 5 will compress the footage to DV.

  Does this mean that using these capture settings : DVCPRO – PAL 48kHz is useless?

  In other words, what are the best capture (compression) settings to make the most out of the digi beta footage which is going to be crushed to DV via the firewire?

  DV – PAL ?

  DVCPRO – PAL?

  dv and dvcpro are essentially the same codec. It will make no difference. Since you are capturing dv, just use DV PAL.

  DV and DVPro are only the same with NTSC, PAL is different.

  With PAL DV uses 4:2:0 sampling, DVPro 4:1:1 sampling (same as with NTSC).
  So it depends on what you want to do. If your target is DVD you should use DV as MPEG-2 also uses 4:2:0 sampling (with DVCPro your final sampling will be 4:1:0 means a quality loss). If you want to go to NTSC whatever (except DVD) DVCPro would be the better choice.

  But I don’t know what kind of sampling comes out of the Sony machine.

  I would imagine since a Sony machine and DVCPro is a Panasonic format, it’d be straight dv pal, but that’s a guess.
