    Hi Folks,
I’m using a Powerbook G4 with FCP 5.0.4 to process a project. I am compressing a video to put on a DVD. I am using 10 external hardrives with a Nitro firewire 800 hub (so data can flow unimpeded with all the hard drives). My project is getting stuck on the 2nd pass for hours & hours—and FCP in “force quit” says not responding. What can be causing this to happen? Everything in the project is rendered. All other projects —even longer ones—get processed without a problem. It is a 14 minute long project being output as “best 90 minute or less, 2 pass, 16 x 9.
I have tried this 2 times (it takes 14 hours to process it) and it locks up on the same frame every time.
I know the system is old & slow, but it’s all I have and can afford to use at this time. The OS is still compatible with my FCP & DVD Studio programs.
    Any ideas?
I just copied the sequence, closed the previous ones that had been sitting open in the project and I am trying it again. Next I will duplicate the project and close this problem one and see about out-put.

Try exporting a reference movie out of FCP and then processing that movie in Compressor instead of exporting from Compressor right from FCP.

I’ll have to look into how to do that, as I don’t know what that is or how to do it. I assume it is in the FCP help files.
Thanks for your response. It is wierd. I succeeded with my movie this time—only because the audio (dolby) file was successful, so I only did the MPEG video file. The Batch monitor window did not crash & close this time (as it has for all my projects—but the compressor program continues to process). It continued compressing & batch monitoring the entire time successfully. It seems to be a combination problem that only worked withthtat one project when both audio & video were being processed. I have reinstalled the program 2 times before a while back when I first started having this problem, but I realized it was only affecting the batch monitor and not the compressor.
I will, however, look into how to make a reference movie.

[Daniel Monskey] “I will, however, look into how to make a reference movie. “

It’s very simple. First, makes sure your timeline is fully rendered. Then go to FIle > Export > Quicktime Movie. Leave it at current settings and leave the recompress all frames and make self contained boxes UNCHECKED. This will export a reference movie that is basically a list of pointers to your original and rendered media.
