down converting uncompressed to DVCPro HD
Hi,
Today I had to take two tapes to a post production house to be transfered to a hard drive. It was 2 tapes – 30 minutes each – shot as DVCPro HD 720p24. They captured it as Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 1080i60. Completely unnecessary, but I guess they did it to cover there butts. So now I’ve got to down-convert, except Compressor is telling me that it’s going to take over 126 hours for one 30-minute clip. Is this correct? That’s like, a week…and I still have another 30 minute clip. Is there another way of doing this?

First off this is NOT down-converting. To downconvert means to take HD and downconvert it to SD.
What you’re doing is transcoding and it’s completely silly to do this at all. Did you tell the Post house exactly what format you wanted? If so, take the tapes back and have them recapture.
What you’re doing is a waste of time and you’ll lose quality doing this through Compressor.

Oh, sorry for my incorrect terminology.
I did not tell them what format to capture. The producer spoke with the post house. I was simply asked to drop off the tapes at 11am and pick everything back up at 5pm…and the post house was late and I didn’t get the stuff til 7.
But that’s all besides the point. I will be sure to tell the producer that it simply needs to be re-done.

hahahaha…ya better believe it’s faster. Compressor is telling me that transcoding a 30-minute clips is going take 125 hours(over 5 days). And then I still have another 30 minute clip after that. I can take a nice vacation to Hawaii and come back before that finishes. So waiting until Monday to get the post house to re-do it is definitely what we’ll do hahaha.
