  Help me with widescreen mattes in FCP?

  I shot a film in 16mm that I have to edit in Final Cut Pro. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1. My professor said that I’d have to create alpha mattes for Final Cut Pro but he wasn’t quite familiar with doing that.

  I was wondering what creating an Alpha matte would do, exaclty. Is that the black bars on top? Becuase if I can avoid that I will. I think my main fear is that on a 4:3 tv the black bars will be on so that the film appears in correct aspect ratio, but on a real widescreen TV it will appear with black bars on the top AND sides – which would be absolutely horrible.

  How can I get it to appear in proper aspect ratio in widescreen TVs – without having it erroneously have bars on the sides?

  I.85:1 is pretty much 16:9. I would edit this on a HD timeline or if doing SD use an anamorphic timeline. Then if you are going to DVD (didn’t say how you are delivering this) you encode it as 16:9 and the DVD player will letterbox for 4:3 and display full widescreen on 16:9.

  How are you telecining the 16mm?

  Standard Definition telecine (it is infinitely cheaper than HD)
