  • Edit to Tape: Writing Video.

Posted by Shane Ross on March 26, 2009 at 12:14 am

    DETAILS:

    MacPro 3.2 Ghz, 8GB RAM
    AJA Kona 3
Footage stored on internal SATA drive
    ProRes 422…captured from HDV, but ProRes 422. 1080i 59.94
    22:45 TRT
    Outputting to HDCAM SR…1080i 59.94.

Everything is fully rendered. FULLY. Yet, when I go to EDIT TO TAPE, ASSEMBLE EDIT…I get WRITING TO VIDEO for 15 min. Whyyyy?

SO to solve this I thought I’d be clever and do what I did when I took my stuff to a post place to be output. I exported a self contained QT movie, then brought it back in, and put it in a new sequence with all of my audio stems. Tried again.

    26-min write to video. WTF?

What is going on? Never had this before. I get it when it is HDV, but ProRes? Even after I made a self contained QT movie with no text?

    I don’t get it.

Can you drag the self-contained QT from the Browser to the ETT window, w/o putting it in a sequence first?

I’ve encountered your problem, and I think that’s how I’ve worked around it.

Issue is that I have 9 tracks of audio that need to go too. Delivery spec audio. And I can’t have all of them in the exported QT file…I have to go from a sequence.

So I have to live with this? I mean, I have three texted and two textless outputs, so I need to wait an hour and 15 min just for this write? It has to save this somewhere…

Stupid FCP…Avid doesn’t do this. HA!

Make sure to get rid of any disabled clips in your timeline. That includes the audio tracks and be sure to look closely as sometimes it could be the littlest of transitions.

    Ahhh…more mystery.

The tape I output to…is PROGRESSIVE! There is no interlacing on the tape. The deck is set up for 1080i 59.94 interlaced…specifically. And my sequence settings are 1080i 29.97…there is no 1080p 29.97 or 1080p30 that I can see. Yet the HDCAM tape is progressive.

Not at work now. I will check an option in the AV settings, in the AV Devices tab, called DIFFERENT OUTPUT FOR EDIT TO TAPE/PRINT TO VIDEO. I need to make sure that is not checked.

Why not Shane? It’s been a long time since QT dropped its 2 channel limits. Just set the sequence audio outputs to 10 channel (5x dual mono), map the timeline track outputs accordingly, and export self contained. (Btw, can we assume you’ve set your User Prefs >> Real Time Audio Mixing to a suitable high number?)

I encountered this once when my RT settings were not set to Safe RT / Full and High.

I thought everything was rendered, but when mastering I found out it was not and I too had multiple versions to master, Supered & Super-less.

OK…I exported the Textless as a QT, and sure enough, it imported back with all the separate tracks. SWEET! But then I dragged it from the Browswer to the ASSEMBLE EDIT in ETT, and…WRITING VIDEO. LONGER now…23 min opposed to 12 min when I drag the sequence.

I NEVER had this with DVCPRO HD. This must be a ProRes thing. Anyone else getting this? Walter? Gary? Bueller? Bueller?

As mentioned earlier by another helpful cow, I also have this ‘writing’ box come up when exporting to tape and it is ALWAYS caused by a disabled video clip somewhere in the timeline.

I investigated this over time and spoke to Apple and they intimated to me that it was a FCP bug but obviously they are in no rush to fix it.
