  • FCP 6.0.5 Renders magically disappeared

I’ve been reading everywhere about this issue in 6.0 but it’s decided to sting me right at the end of a project.

I’m editing a 27 min spot that’s a compilation of some of our other works for an informercial type broadcast.

So I’ve built my timeline in FCP and been rendering along the way with no issues, now for final proofing I decided to pull up the project on my Laptop (Leopard intel FCP 6.0.5) instead of the workstation (Tiger powerpc G5 FCP 6.0.5).

All i did was close the project, eject the external HD that EVERYTHING is on (I’m diligent about scratch disks). Move to the other side of the room and plug in the HD to my laptop to make the client changes. As soon as I duplicated my sequence to make the change, all render files got lost. I don’t mean FCP says they’re offline, FCP just seems to forget they ever existed, however the 10.5 GB of Renders are all living in the same location on the HD.

Please Help, as I’m stuck with an unexpected 7 hours of rendering? It seems like the old bug that was supposedly fixed in 6.0.2 and I also looked in the FCP application package contents to no avail.

    Dan,

This is a very common issue. The render files get named automatically by FCP with some strange and cryptic naming convention that seems to be “machine specific.”

Even when using Media Manager to copy everything the render files will disappear and require a re-render.

So, get on with your re-render, as it’s probably going to be a necessity.

    Thanks,

I’m 2 minutes away from that re-render I was just hoping that as magically as they’d disappeared from the project that they could re-appear in some sort of ‘gotcha’ fix.

Just so strange that it always happens at the end of the project.

    Cheers

You can always restore your project if you have it set close enough to the time when the renders disappeared.
