  Proxies — ideal file type

  Is there an ideal file type to use for proxies? I have been using PNG files as proxies for individual psd layers (I do character animation) but have not noticed much change in performance even though the size is a lot smaller. I choose PNG because because the file size seemed to be the smallest. Should I be using another filetype instead? Does it matter?

  Any file format will do. How large are your original files and how small are the proxies – in terms of pixel resolution?

  The obvious is to ensure that you’re working with the proxies. I normally use QuickTime’s Video CODEC. And for HD work, it really speeds things up.
